Dutch Meatballs

Image of Dutch meatballsMeatballs are often eaten in the winter, but are popular all year round. They are easy to make and provide a nice variation to the classic trio of meat, potatoes and vegetables.

Serve with apple puree (try making your own here) and that Dutch condiment of choice, mayonnaise. Eet smakelijk!

Hearty Vegetable Vijfschaft

Image of Dutch Vegetable VijfschaftAs the recent snowfall in England, which more or less brought London to a halt, attests, winter is not over yet. Even though you probably wish it was, in food terms, this means it is not too late to indulge hearty, warming meals, such as vijfschaft.

There is no easy way to translate the name of this dish, which originates from the Province of Utrecht. It is best described as a filling stew of potatoes, carrots, onions and brown beans, served with a smoky bacon gravy. Add in an apple for a hint of sweetness, and you have a healthy, one-pot dinner that is a meal in itself. It is easy enough to make this recipe vegetarian. Eet smakelijk!
