Dutch Meatballs

A variation on the popular Dutch meat, potatoes and vegetables theme, these meatballs are easy to make and are loved by children and adults alike.

Tip: This recipe is a great way to use up stale bread.

Serves 4

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

2 slices white or brown bread
3 ½ fl oz / 100 ml milk
1 lb / 500 g minced beef
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Pinch of nutmeg
Breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons sunflower oil

Preparation:
Cut the crusts off the bread and tear into small pieces. Put the milk in a shallow dish and soak the bread in it.

Once the bread is soft, squeeze out any excess milk and mix into the minced meat. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg.

Divide the meat into 12 equal portions and roll into balls.

Put the breadcrumbs in a shallow dish and coat each meatball.

In a large saucepan, heat the oil over a medium heat and fry the meatballs until light brown on all sides. Turn frequently.

Reduce the heat and let the meatballs cook for a further 8-10 minutes, turning regularly, until crispy on the outside and cooked all the way through.

Serve with boiled or mashed potatoes and a steamed green vegetable. Delicious accompanied by apple puree.
